Alejandra Topete Gallery is pleased to present "Explorations: Past to Present," featuring the work of John R. Thompson. His art is known for combining geometric forms with organic shapes. Through repetitive patterns and irregular surfaces that could be described as "fleshy geometry," he creates a unique approach that brings warmth and physicality to a typically cold and precise artistic tradition. Thompson's work can be described as somewhere in between paintings and sculptures.
John has exhibited his work internationally, including in Europe (Switzerland, Austria, Germany), the United States, and Mexico. He has regularly shown his work at the Luise Ross Gallery in New York for over twenty years. Recent exhibitions include Material Art Fair 2025 (Salón Silicon booth, Mexico City), OLIMPO – La estructura del impacto (Mérida, 2023), Material Art Fair 2022 (Salón Silicon, Guadalajara), and a solo show at Salón Silicon (Mexico City, 2023), curated by Carlos Palacios. Earlier exhibitions include the Whitney Museum of American Art (1990), the SoHo Center for Visual Arts (1987, NY), and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, NY (1993) with Order Out of Chaos.
John’s works are well known for combining paint, enamel, sawdust, glass, plexiglass, and, most importantly, the plywood base. Each of his works is typically the result of objects existing in multiple layers, in which he creates irregular, asymmetrical patterns and shapes. A primary focus evokes something broken, shattered, or slashed and held together with paint. He makes his work by breaking up certain two-dimensional surfaces to produce a three-dimensional object.
This exhibit explores John's work and the transition between the past and present (1980s—2025). One can easily notice how his style, design, and use of colors have evolved, yet ironically been repeated. It is an exploration of materials, surfaces, and colors, and an evolution where John has continually connected his works from the past to those in the present. He continues to explore his ideas and sources of inspiration and expand his creativity.
