John R. Thompson

Colección: John R. Thompson

John Thompson (Schenectady, New York, 1947) is an eccentric artist who has lived between Mérida and Mexico City for 18 years. While he maintains visibility through his project space "108ag_projects" in Colonia Juárez, his work exists outside mainstream Mexican art circles and genealogies. He operates with the dedication of an outsider artist, though not strictly defined by this label.

Thompson transforms geometric art by converting rationalist rigidity into organic, bulbous forms that challenge the polished aesthetic of abstract geometric tradition. His sculptural reliefs feature protuberances that introduce a tactile, corporeal element rarely seen in geometric work. Through obsessive pictorial repetitions and the lumpy materiality of his pieces, Thompson creates what could be called a fleshy, carnal geometry. This unconventional approach establishes his unique position in the tradition of geometric abstraction, embodying an extravagant reinterpretation of typically austere formal language.
