Alejandra Topete Gallery is pleased to have hosted such talented artists during its two-month art residency, held in the gallery's main room. The artists were carefully selected from among many applicants following an open call.

In November, the residency welcomed two Mexican artists, Chica Ayala and Gabriela Buenrostro. Ayala, a sculptor trained at Universidad Iberoamericana with further specialization in ceramics and art market studies, continued her exploration of resin during the residency, creating organic, abstract forms inspired by the colors and architecture of Casa Luis Barragán, located parallel to the gallery.

Buenrostro's multidisciplinary practice centers on movement, memory, and transformation. Through abstract painting, language, and mixed media, she explored themes of memory and forgetting, using imperfect circles, layered gestures, and Barragán-inspired color palettes to reflect on time, wandering, and reinvention.

During the December residency, we hosted two international artists. Anji Woodley, a South African multidisciplinary artist based in Toronto, experimented with clay and canvas to create sculptural, textile-like wall pieces inspired by brainwave patterns and states of consciousness, as well as figurative works on paper, using a mixed-media technique of oil pastel, ink, and acrylic paint.

Additionally, German artist Alfred Müller, based near Stuttgart, developed large-scale paintings that merge his European painting roots with Mexican influences. Inspired by the colors, architecture, and atmosphere of Mexico—particularly Yucatán and Casa Barragán—his work explores spatial depth, color, and light through a distinctive two-layer painting technique.

It was the gallery's first time hosting a residency, and it was interesting to see each artist's unique expression of their travels through Mexico's culture and Barragan's architectural surroundings of the gallery.

An exhibition will be held at the gallery at the end of the residency, showcasing the work done during the artist's time in Mexico City. Follow us on Instagram and sign up for our newsletter to get updates on the opening date and times.
